Kona, Tucson, Santa Fe. ¿Por qué Hyundai le pone a sus SUVs el nombre de lugares soleados en los Estados Unidos? Además, el nombre de Santa Fe puede haber sido adecuado para lo que alguna vez fue un pequeño SUV de aspecto alegre y robusto cuando apareció por primera vez en el año 2000, pero con el paso de los años se ha convertido en el gran buque insignia de la marca.
Ahora este popular SUV de siete plazas y tamaño mediano (y rival del nuevo CX-8 de Mazda) ha dado otro gran paso adelante en su diseño y tecnología con la llegada de la nueva generación de Santa Fe.
Entonces, ¿quizás necesite un nuevo nombre? Y dado que el coche fue probado tan extensamente en Australia en cuanto a la idoneidad para climas calurosos y el ajuste de la suspensión, entonces, ¿debería tener un nombre australiano?
Vale, no importa cómo se llame, lo que es importante es lo que ha cambiado, y muchas cosas han cambiado, pero otras no. Siga leyendo para obtener más información.

El Hyundai Tucson nunca iba a quedar fuera de lugar en medio de la gama de SUVs más agresivos de la compañía coreana, así que lo que se ve aquí es la actualización de la mediana edad del popular SUV de tamaño mediano.
Es cierto que el modelo Hyundai Tucson 2019 no se parece exactamente al Kona más pequeño o al Santa Fe de siete asientos más grande, ambos más…. malvados.
Pero hay algunos cambios cosméticos menores para este modelo actualizado de Tucson – y la historia subyacente aquí es que las enmiendas van más allá del metal.
La tecnología del Tucson ha sido mejorada, y también lo han sido las transmisiones, además de que se ha modificado la gama de modelos. ¿Cómo se acumula todo esto? Vayamos al grano.

Esta nueva generación de Santa Fe se ve totalmente diferente al modelo anterior, por dentro y por fuera. El frente ahora tiene la misma «cara al revés» que el SUV más pequeño de Hyundai, el Kona con los LED DRL colocados en alto y los faros bajos, a ambos lados de una versión de gran tamaño de la llamada «parrilla en cascada» de Hyundai. A lo largo del borde de la parrilla hay una tira de cromo que parece tan amenazante que si entras en un pub con una de ellas, la policía es llamada de inmediato.
Al igual que la Kona, el diseño de Santa Fe tiene más ángulos que un transportador. Disculpas por la broma de Papá, pero mírala – hay combinaciones de formas y líneas que incluso Salvador Dalí encontraría raras, pero de alguna manera funciona, y el resultado es un SUV que es impresionante y diferente.
Puede que no lo veas claramente en las imágenes, pero el capó está presionado con una forma de «aumento de potencia» que realmente sólo se encuentra en los coches musculares como el Ford Mustang. Además, es difícil de ver cómo los dolores de ruedas son realmente sangrados en lugar de abultados. Me gusta esa alta línea de hombros que va desde la punta del LED DRL hasta la luz trasera que acentúa la longitud del SUV, luego en la parte trasera las cosas se vuelven más altas y refinadas con líneas elegantes y limpias.
Es casi imposible distinguir entre los tres grados desde el exterior. Lo que es bueno si usted compra el coche con especificaciones básicas donde los únicos regalos son las llantas de aleación de 17 pulgadas y la falta de brillo en la parrilla que viene en el Elite y Highlander junto con las llantas de 18 y 19 pulgadas respectivamente. El kit de carrocería que usted ve es estándar en todas las Santa Fes, incluyendo ese sutil alerón en el techo.
Si usted pensó que el exterior había cambiado mucho de la Santa Fe anterior, eche un vistazo a las imágenes interiores – no sólo la cabina es muy diferente, sino que es el siguiente nivel para Hyundai en términos de refinamiento. Una vez más, hay algunas formas extrañas como el guión bajo con esa área similar a una piscina sobre la guantera, y las rejillas de ventilación que sobresalen como nidos de avispas, pero el efecto general es sofisticado.
Los asientos de tela gris/espalda del Active bajan un poco el tono, pero los de cuero de las calidades Elite y Highlander tienen un aspecto lujoso en los colores Negro, Beige Oscuro y Borgoña. También hay insertos para puertas y salpicaderos de piedra, madera y fibra de carbono en las dos calidades superiores.
Los colores de la carrocería incluyen la Mica Blanca Crema estándar y la Mica Marinera Tormentosa (azul). Luego están Typhoon Silver, Wild Explorer (gris), Magnetic force (otro tono de gris), Earthly Bronze, Rainforest metallic, Horizon Red y Phantom Black.
El nuevo Santa Fe parece mucho más largo que antes, pero las dimensiones muestran un aumento de 70 mm de longitud para un total de 4770 mm de extremo a extremo. El ancho ha aumentado en 10 mm para 1890 mm de ancho, mientras que a 1680 mm de altura (1705 con barras de techo estándar), la tarifa Santa Fee es 10 mm más baja en altura en comparación con el modelo anterior.

El diseño exterior del Tucson actualizado no ha cambiado en gran medida – la metalistería no ha sido alterada, pero hay nuevos diferenciadores gráficos si echa un vistazo a las luces en cada extremo del SUV.
El nuevo diseño de la parrilla en cascada de Hyundai domina la parte delantera, y aunque la forma de los faros no ha cambiado, sí lo han hecho las incrustaciones, y junto con el nuevo parachoques hay más luces diurnas LED angulares. Las versiones de mayor calidad se distinguen por la rejilla cromada de listones horizontales, mientras que los modelos de entrada tienen un aspecto de panal de abeja negro con un marco plateado.
Lamentablemente, sólo se pueden obtener faros LED en la especificación superior, pero la apariencia en los modelos de menor calidad que funcionan con lámparas halógenas para proyectores se ve realmente reducida por la mezcla de luces blancas angulares y una bombilla redonda y amarilla en el centro.
Los faros traseros tienen un aspecto ligeramente diferente – de nuevo, con una incrustación diferente, y de nuevo con LEDs que sólo se adaptan a la especificación superior. Los reflectores se han movido un poco hacia arriba, reflejando la parte trasera del i30 Euro-look.
Como es de esperar, no hay diferencia en las dimensiones – es el mismo tamaño de la nariz a la cola en 4480mm de largo, 1850mm de ancho y hasta 1660mm de alto (con rieles de techo).
Independientemente del modelo que elija, el Tucson no tiene un borde deportivo: puede olvidarse de un kit de carrocería o de un difusor trasero, pero hay un alerón trasero. Un conjunto de escalones laterales podría ser instalado, pero puede ser innecesario, porque el Tucson no se sienta tan alto.
Lo adivinaste, las dimensiones interiores tampoco han cambiado. Pero como muestran las imágenes del interior, ahora hay diferentes opciones en cuanto al color de la piel que se puede conseguir. Usted puede elegir el cuero más ligero como parte de un’Pack de Lujo’.

Todos los Santa Fes australianos son de siete plazas. Mientras que esta nueva generación ha crecido en longitud en 70 mm y la distancia entre ejes es 65 mm más larga, las dimensiones interiores han permanecido prácticamente iguales. De hecho, el espacio para las piernas en la tercera fila es 20 mm menos, mientras que la segunda fila gana sólo 1 mm. Aún así, como la segunda fila está sobre rieles, cuando es empujada hacia atrás a su punto más lejano, puedo sentarme detrás de mi posición de conducción con un espacio de aproximadamente 50 mm entre mis rodillas y el respaldo del asiento, y mido 191 cm de altura.
Si deslizo la segunda fila hacia adelante para darme más o menos la anchura de un pelo, entonces puedo sentarme en la tercera fila con la misma cantidad de espacio. No es lo ideal, pero tampoco es un obstáculo cuando se considera que la tercera fila es realmente para niños o una buena parada si necesita transportar adultos de forma inesperada. Hay que recordar que el Santa Fe no es tan grande como un Toyota Kluger o un Mazda CX-9, en su lugar, míralo como un gran medio con una tercera fila de bonificación.
También se ha mejorado la entrada en la tercera fila, ya que la segunda fila se desliza hacia adelante para facilitar el acceso con sólo pulsar un botón. La entrada todavía no es súper fácil para alguien de mi altura (y falta de coordinación) pero es mejor que el modelo anterior.
Una gran fortaleza de la nueva Santa Fe es el almacenamiento. En la parte delantera hay un gran compartimiento de almacenamiento en la consola central debajo del reposabrazos central, más espacio de almacenamiento debajo del salpicadero y delante de los dos portavasos, una gran guantera y un estante con una superficie de agarre encima, además de grandes portabotellas en las puertas.
Los habitantes de la segunda fila tienen dos portavasos en el reposabrazos central abatible, portabotellas en las puertas y una bandeja de almacenamiento en la parte trasera de la consola central.
Las personas en la fila de atrás tienen dos portavasos en el lado derecho y una papelera en el otro.
Todas las Santa Fes tienen dos puertos USB de cambio rápido en la segunda fila, y uno en el frente junto con un puerto USB normal para la entrada de medios, así como una almohadilla de carga Qi. También hay un puerto AUX y una toma de 12 voltios en el agujero escondido debajo del tablero y otra en el maletero.
Hablando del maletero, el aumento de longitud ha dado a la Santa Fe más espacio para el equipaje, con una capacidad de carga que aumenta en 31 litros hasta los 547 litros. También hay espacio debajo del piso del maletero para guardar tus zapatos sucios y tu ropa mojada.

Los cambios en el interior incluyen un diseño de salpicadero que refleja el de Santa Fe y Kona, y que parece mucho más moderno que la configuración existente.
Se compone de una nueva pantalla multimedia tipo tableta, que es una unidad de 7,0 pulgadas en el modelo básico y esta pantalla de 8,0 pulgadas en el resto de la gama. La pantalla más grande añade radio digital y navegación por satélite, pero todos los modelos vienen con Apple CarPlay y Android Auto.
A algunas personas les puede gustar que la pantalla esté encima del tablero, así que está en su línea de visión y es más fácil de controlar cuando está conduciendo. Otros preferirán donde solía estar, en el lugar donde están ahora los conductos de ventilación.
Los controles están bien colocados, los asientos son cómodos y ofrecen un buen ajuste, y el espacio de almacenamiento también está bien ordenado – hay portavasos entre los asientos delanteros y traseros, portabotellas en las cuatro puertas, y cubículos de objetos sueltos aquí y allá también, además de un cargador de teléfono inalámbrico en el modelo de altas prestaciones.
Hay dos opciones de colores interiores en los modelos Active X, Elite y Highlander revestidos de piel, y es ordenado… pero, ¿se siente tan especial como un Mazda CX-5? No exactamente.
El asiento trasero es muy espacioso, considerando que las dimensiones externas del Tucson no son tan grandes como las de muchos de sus competidores. Con el asiento del conductor en mi posición (mido 182 cm de altura) y yo detrás de él, tengo fácilmente suficiente espacio para las piernas traseras para estar cómodo, suficiente espacio para los dedos de los pies para evitar que se adormezcan, y también mucho espacio para la cabeza, incluso en el Highlander de altas prestaciones con un techo panorámico de cristal.
Debería poder colocar tres en la espalda sin demasiadas molestias, y hay dos posiciones ISOFIX y tres puntos superiores. Las salidas de aire traseras sólo se ajustan a las dos especificaciones superiores, lo que es molesto, y los tres modelos superiores tienen un cargador USB trasero, pero el modelo base no lo tiene.
Las dimensiones del espacio del maletero que se ofrecen en el Tucson son buenas: más grandes que un Nissan Qashqai y un Mazda CX-5, pero no tan grandes como un X-Trail o un Honda CR-V. La capacidad de equipaje es de 488 litros con los asientos levantados y el espacio de almacenamiento se amplía a 1478 litros con los asientos plegados.
Cada modelo tiene una rueda de repuesto del mismo tamaño debajo del piso del maletero y del revestimiento de la carga (y usted obtiene una cubierta retráctil para mantener la vista alejada de la carga de su maletero), y el de especificaciones superiores tiene un maletero eléctrico. Si usted es un representante de ventas o tiene perros, es posible que desee considerar una barrera, la cual puede colocar detrás del asiento trasero.
Si eso no es suficiente, todos los modelos vienen con rieles de techo, por lo que el montaje de un sistema de barras de techo no será un gran problema.
Motor y transmisión

Hay dos motores en la gama Santa Fe – uno de 2.4 litros 138kW/241Nm gasolina de cuatro cilindros con una transmisión automática de seis velocidades y otro de 2.2 litros 147kW/440Nm turbo-diesel de cuatro cilindros con un nuevo motor de ocho velocidades. Ambos han sido transferidos de la generación anterior de Santa Fe y tienen los mismos resultados.
Sólo el grado Active le ofrece la posibilidad de elegir entre ambos motores, mientras que el Elite y el Highlander son sólo diesel.
El accionamiento se distribuye a las cuatro ruedas a través del sistema HTRAC AWD, que ofrece cuatro modos: Comodidad, ECO, Sport y Smart (completo con un gráfico en el que se muestra la distribución de la unidad). Los tres primeros son obvios, pero Smart analiza su estilo de conducción y crea una configuración del motor, la transmisión y la dirección que se adapte a sus necesidades.
Aunque todos los Santa Fes son actualmente AWD, Hyundai le dijo a CarsGuide que estaba revisando el caso para una versión con tracción a las dos ruedas.
La capacidad de remolque sigue siendo la misma de 2000 kg.
Ambos motores tienen una cadena de distribución en lugar de una correa de distribución – la cadena tiene una vida útil de por vida que ahorra los costes de mantenimiento de cambiar una correa.

La gama es bastante compleja en términos de transmisiones, especificaciones y capacidades del motor, pero repasemos cada motor en detalle.
El motor básico es el de cuatro cilindros sin turbo de 2,0 litros de gasolina, que Hyundai denomina 2.0 GDi (inyección directa de gasolina). Produce 122kW de potencia a 6200rpm y 205Nm de par a 4000rpm, y está disponible con una transmisión manual de seis velocidades o una transmisión automática de seis velocidades. Viene en FWD (4×2) solamente. Esta cadena cinemática ha sufrido algunos ajustes para lograr un mejor refinamiento, pero los cambios no son revolucionarios.
El siguiente motor en marcha es en realidad más pequeño en tamaño, pero cuenta con un turbocompresor para aumentar la potencia – es el 1.6 T-GDi, y tiene 130kW de potencia (a 5500rpm) y 265Nm de par (1500-4500rpm). Sólo viene con un doble embrague automático y AWD (el sistema es una unidad bajo demanda, a diferencia de una adecuada configuración permanente de las 4 RM con un rango bajo). Esta transmisión no ha sufrido ningún cambio en comparación con la versión anterior al estiramiento facial.
El motor diesel que se ofrece es la unidad 2.0 CRDi turbo de cuatro cilindros, que tiene 136kW (a 4000rpm) y 400Nm (1750-2750rpm). Solía estar disponible con una automática de seis velocidades, pero ahora tiene una automática de ocho velocidades.
El consumo de combustible de este modelo ha bajado – más en la siguiente sección. El motor cumple con la normativa Euro 5, lo que significa que no hay AdBlue, pero sí un filtro de partículas diesel.
Así que hay dos gasolinas y un diesel, pero no tenemos ninguna versión GLP, híbrido enchufable o EV del Tucson.
Ningún modelo en el lanzamiento tenía una barra de remolque instalada, así que no hay ninguna parte de esta revisión que toque ese elemento de capacidad de carga – pero cada modelo tiene la misma capacidad de remolque de 750kg con un remolque sin frenos y 1600kg para un remolque con frenos. Sin embargo, el límite de peso hacia abajo de la bola de remolque difiere para los modelos de tracción delantera (120kg) y AWD (140kg).
El peso bruto del vehículo, o GVM, varía dependiendo del modelo, con la base FWD Active listada en 2070kg (con un peso mínimo en orden de marcha de 1497kg) y el Highlander diesel AWD de altas prestaciones listada en 2280kg (peso mínimo en orden de marcha: 1707kg).

La economía de combustible ha mejorado en ambos motores, pero sólo ligeramente. Según Hyundai, la gasolina de 2,4 litros utiliza 9,3 L/100 km (frente a los 9,4 L/100 km) y el gasóleo de 2,2 litros utiliza 7,5 L/100 km (frente a los 7,8 L/100 km) en una combinación de carreteras abiertas y urbanas.
El ordenador de a bordo del Active petrol reportó un promedio de 12.3L/100km para el lanzamiento, mientras que el Elite diesel leyó 9.9L/100km. Esto no es un gran kilometraje, especialmente si se compara con las ofertas comparables de Mazda, una empresa que está dando grandes pasos para mejorar la eficiencia de sus motores de combustión.
El motor de gasolina no es quisquilloso con el combustible y con gusto beberá 91 RON sin plomo.

El Hyundai Tucson no es el SUV más eficiente que se puede comprar, pero tampoco es el más sediento – y los números no han cambiado mucho como parte de esta actualización.
El consumo de combustible es de 7,8 litros por cada 100 kilómetros (o 12,8 kilómetros por litro, si así lo prefiere) para la tracción delantera manual de 2,0 litros de gasolina, mientras que la tracción delantera automática de 2,0 litros se sitúa en 7,9 L/100 km (12,6 km/L).
El modelo DCT AWD turboalimentado de gasolina de 1,6 litros ha registrado un consumo de 7,7L/100km (13,0km/L).
El consumo de combustible diesel ha mejorado gracias a la transmisión automática de ocho velocidades, que ahora tiene una velocidad de 6,4 l/100 km (15,6 km/L), mientras que anteriormente era de 6,8 l/100 km (14,7 km/L) para el Highlander.
Todos los modelos tienen una capacidad del depósito de combustible de 62 litros – un buen tamaño para garantizar un kilometraje decente para la conducción de larga distancia, especialmente si se sigue el «modo ecológico».

El piloto de pruebas de CarsGuide Matt Campbell condujo el Hyundai Santa Fe de nueva generación en Corea a principios de 2018, pero el SUV que dirigió reflejaba un motor y una suspensión que no se verán en Australia. Así que esta fue nuestra primera oportunidad de conducir un Santa Fe australiano y ver cómo se siente en las carreteras locales.
Puede que ya lo sepas, pero Hyundai tiene un equipo de ingenieros en Australia que afina cada nuevo modelo para adaptarse al tipo de carreteras por las que circulamos y a las preferencias locales. Por ejemplo, a los australianos les gusta su suspensión en el lado firme para una sensación más deportiva, no suave y ondulada como lo hacen en los Estados Unidos de América.
No todas las empresas automovilísticas llevan a cabo este tipo de tuning local. Muchos son sacados de la caja y puestos en la sala de exposición, pero no vamos a dar nombres aquí. Sin embargo, debe saber que Hyundai sometió a esta nueva generación de Santa Fe a pruebas intensivas en carreteras australianas, cambiando los amortiguadores delanteros 27 veces y los traseros 22 veces a lo largo del camino. La dirección también fue calibrada específicamente para Australia.
El lanzamiento local nos vio conducir unos 300 km a través de la naturaleza que se extiende hacia el interior desde Coffs Harbour, en la costa norte de Nueva Gales del Sur, sobre una combinación de caminos de tierra, autopistas, serpenteante bitumen de gran espesor y las superficies no tan grandes de las calles de las ciudades rurales. Lo que faltaba eran los tipos de calles urbanas y urbanas donde muchas Santa Fes probablemente pasarán toda su vida.
Sin embargo, fue más que suficiente para aprender que la nueva configuración de la suspensión ha dado como resultado un Santa Fe que se siente cómodo pero afilado al mismo tiempo. Las caídas grandes se absorben bien y casi no salen rebotes de ellas, mientras que el cuerpo permanece compuesto en superficies irregulares.
Conduje el Elite de grado medio primero y encontré los neumáticos Kumho Crugen (235/60/R18) un poco ruidosos en las carreteras con virutas gruesas a pesar del aislamiento acústico que, según Hyundai, se ha añadido a la carrocería inferior del Santa Fe.
La dirección era lo suficientemente ligera como para realizar un giro de tres puntos con sólo mi dedo meñique, que es lo que quieres para aparcar y pilotar en los aparcamientos de los supermercados.
Esa dirección es bastante directa, lo que significa que no tienes que girar el volante muy lejos para cambiar de dirección.
Hay una buena sensación de conexión entre las ruedas de la carretera y las manos en el volante. Esto, combinado con la suspensión compuesta, cómoda, pero firme, añade mucha confianza y seguridad. Es la diferencia entre correr en botes de goma y en zapatillas de deporte.
El Elite tiene un motor turbo-diesel de 2,2 litros (no hay alternativa de gasolina en este grado). Es suave, con mucho gruñido, y aunque no es tan silencioso como el equivalente de Mazda, es más refinado y silencioso que la mayoría – así que no temas, este motor diesel no es para nada un «camión como».
La nueva automática de ocho velocidades es excelente. Una debilidad en el Santa Fe anterior era el auto de seis velocidades y tener otras dos relaciones de velocidad es bienvenido – especialmente para conducir en carretera.
La calidad de base Active rueda sobre los neumáticos Ventus Prime de Hankook (235/65 R17). Pasé sólo 25 km conduciendo esta pendiente, pero la diferencia de conducción y confort entre ella y las otras es casi imperceptible. En todo caso, es probable que esos neumáticos, con su pared lateral más alta, ofrezcan una conducción un poco más suave.
La calidad Active le ofrece la posibilidad de elegir entre motores de gasolina y diesel. Conduje la gasolina e inmediatamente me perdí la mezcla del diesel, que tiene casi el doble de par y más potencia. Esa gasolina de cuatro cilindros con seis velocidades no es tan adecuada para este Santa Fe aún más grande. Si Hyundai sacara una gasolina V6, como lo hizo con la generación anterior, sería un Santa Fe tentador, aunque más sediento.
El Highlander de altas prestaciones tiene las ruedas más grandes con los neumáticos de perfil más bajo – Continental ContiSportContact 5 que son un excelente (y aproximadamente el doble del precio de los Hankooks). El Highlander es sólo diesel como el Elite. Una vez más – gran gruñido y un viaje cómodo, pero todavía hay algo de ruido de la carretera, el motor y el viento que se filtra en la cabina.
Todas las Santa Fes están equipadas con el nuevo sistema Hyundai’HTRAC’ (Hyundai Traction) de tracción en las cuatro ruedas (AWD) y los muchos kilómetros de caminos de tierra y grava que se encuentran en el camino le han dado un buen entrenamiento. HTRAC es un sistema bajo demanda que distribuye el par a las cuatro ruedas donde se necesita. Me impresionó – incluso a 80 km/h sobre grava suelta, el Santa Fe doblado como si estuviera en la pista – empujó un poco más fuerte, hubo un cierto deslizamiento, pero el sistema rápidamente puso las cosas bajo control.
El Santa Fe no es un vehículo todo terreno de la misma manera que un Toyota LandCruiser. No tiene un sistema de tracción a las cuatro ruedas con un alcance bajo, pero su distancia al suelo de 185 mm y el sistema AWD le llevará más allá de lo que usted podría haber pensado.

Había una mezcla de modelos en oferta en el lanzamiento. Conduje el diesel Elite, las versiones FWD de los modelos Go y Active X, y el turbo-petrol Highlander. Así que me fui con una buena comprensión de las fortalezas y debilidades de cada transmisión – aunque hay que decir que aquí no hay interruptores reales.
Comencemos con la cadena cinemática de gasolina de 2,0 litros, que representará la gran mayoría de las ventas de Tucson, y que ha sido ajustada en esta iteración con un par máximo que llega un poco antes. Eso significa que no es necesario revolucionarla tanto para obtener lo mejor de ella, pero aún así le gusta un revés.
Esta vez, sin embargo, el refinamiento se ha mejorado, con menos estridencia a medida que se construyen revoluciones. Y aunque no es rápido, no se esfuerza por mantenerse en movimiento, y es más que adecuado para la gran mayoría de las necesidades de la gente.
